Is blue cheese gluten-free?

Yes

Yes, for almost all blue cheese. The blue mold is sometimes grown on bread first, but Canadian Celiac Association testing found no measurable gluten in blue cheese or its mold cultures. Flavored or crumbled blues need a label check.

Blue cheese is milk, salt, cultures, rennet and Penicillium roqueforti mold. The worry comes from how that mold is sometimes started: on rye or wheat bread. Registered dietitian Tricia Thompson reports that the Canadian Celiac Association tested blue cheeses and mold cultures grown on gluten-containing media and found gluten below the level the tests can measure.

Pre-crumbled blue cheese can contain an anti-caking agent, which is usually cellulose or potato starch, not wheat. Flavored blue cheese spreads and dressings have more ingredients. Read those labels, and keep the cheese away from crackers on a shared board.

What to check

  • crumbled blue cheese: the anti-caking agent in the ingredient list
  • dressings, spreads and flavored blues: the full ingredient list
  • the board: give gluten-free crackers their own plate
