Is honey vegan?

No

No. Honey is made by bees, and the Vegan Society doesn't consider it vegan. On a vegan board, use fig jam, membrillo or another fruit preserve for the sweet note.

Honey is one of the most common additions to a cheese board, which makes it easy to forget on a vegan one. It also hides in hot honey, honey mustard, honey-roasted nuts and many graham crackers.

Some vegetarians eat honey and some vegans debate it, but the Vegan Society's position is clear, and it's the safe default when you're hosting someone else.

What to check

  • hot honey and truffle honey
  • honey mustard and honey-roasted nuts
  • graham crackers and some granola
