Quick Answer: Our top pick for butter on a charcuterie board is Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter (Salted) (4.7 out of 5). Value: Land O Lakes Salted Butter. Splurge: Les Prés Salés Camargue Sea Salt Butter. We ranked 7 widely sold options on how they work on a board, published taste tests and awards, ingredients, value and how easy they are to find.
A butter board is only as good as the butter. When it's spread across a board and eaten on bread, you taste every difference in cream, salt and tang. Three taste tests ranked grocery butters, and one brand came out on top or close to it in all three.
How we ranked these: these are researched picks, not a side-by-side tasting. We scored each product on published taste tests and awards, its ingredient list, price and where you can buy it, plus how that style of product behaves on a board. Sources are listed at the end, and the full method is on our buying guides hub. Prices and stock last checked October 2026.

What to look for on the label
Label check: Look for cream (and salt) as the only ingredients. "European style" or a butterfat number of 82% or more means a richer, softer spread. Salted butter tastes better on a board. If you buy unsalted, finish it with flaky salt.
Skip: Spreads, margarine and plant butters labeled "spread." Food Republic ranked them at the bottom, and they turn greasy or gelatinous at room temperature.
Serving it: soften the butter at room temperature for about 1 hour so it spreads without tearing, then swoop it across the board and top it with flaky salt, honey, herbs or jam. Once it's topped with herbs, garlic, cheese or fruit, leave it out no more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. See our butter board guide for toppings and bread.
