The Best Camembert for a Charcuterie Board: What to Buy

Quick Answer: For most boards, buy Marin French Cheese Co. Camembert, which placed second in its class at the 2024 American Cheese Society awards. Président Camembert is the easiest to find in a supermarket. Every Camembert sold in US stores is made from pasteurized milk, so the raw-milk Camembert de Normandie sold in France isn't available here. No published taste test has ranked grocery Camembert side by side, so this guide names what to buy without star scores.

Camembert is a small, soft-ripened cow's milk cheese from Normandy: stronger, earthier and softer than brie, and the right size to serve as a whole wheel. In US stores you'll usually find three or four brands. These are the ones worth buying for a board, and how to tell a good wheel from a chalky one.

How we picked these: no published side-by-side taste test of grocery-store Camembert exists yet, so this guide is not scored with stars like our other buying guides. Instead it names the widely sold options, what each is like and where to find it, using award results where they exist, the few published tests that include them and how this kind of soft-ripened cheese behaves on a board. Sources are listed at the end, and our method is on the buying guides hub. Stock last checked October 2026.

The best Camembert to buy for a charcuterie board

Marin French Cheese Co. Camembert

Best overall · Best for: The most flavor · $$ mid-range

Made in California by Marin French Cheese Co., founded in 1865 and the oldest operating cheese company in the US (California Dairy Magazine). Its Camembert placed second in its category at the 2024 American Cheese Society competition, described as having a velvety rind and complex, earthy flavor (Deli Market News).

Président Camembert

Easiest to find · Best for: A reliable supermarket wheel · $ budget

An 8 oz French-style wheel from Président, sold in the specialty cheese case at most large US supermarkets (Président). The same company's triple-crème brie placed second in the Brie and Camembert class at the 2025 US Championship Cheese Contest (The Monroe Times).

Ile de France Camembert

Also good · Best for: A mild, buttery wheel · $ budget

Another 8 oz soft-ripened wheel from a French brand you'll find in many supermarket cheese cases (Giant Food). Mild and buttery, a good choice when guests are new to Camembert.

A Normandy Camembert from the cheese counter

Splurge · Best for: The most traditional flavor · $$ mid-range

Cheese counters often carry a pasteurized Camembert made in Normandy, sold whole in a thin wooden box. It won't be the raw-milk Camembert de Normandie, which US rules keep off the shelf, but it's the closest you'll get (Wikipedia). Ask to see the wheel and press the edge gently.

How to choose

Camembert or brie? Camembert is smaller, stronger and slightly tangy, and it softens more as it warms. Brie is milder and holds its shape better. If you want one soft cheese everyone will eat, buy brie. If the board already has a mild cheese, Camembert adds more character. Our brie vs Camembert guide compares them in detail, and our ranking of the best brie covers the brie side.

What to look for on the label

Label check: The wheel should give slightly when you press the edge, with a white rind that may show faint reddish-brown flecks. Check the date: Camembert keeps ripening in the fridge, and a wheel a week or two from its date is usually at its best.

Skip: Wheels that feel hard all the way through (underripe and chalky), or that smell strongly of ammonia, or have a rind pulling away from the cheese (overripe).

How much to buy: one 8 oz wheel serves 6 to 8 people alongside two other cheeses. How to serve it: take it out of the fridge 45 to 60 minutes before serving, and serve it whole with a small knife so guests can cut wedges. Leave the rind on: it's meant to be eaten. Baking it: Camembert bakes as well as brie. Score the top, bake at 350°F for about 15 minutes and serve with crusty bread, like our baked brie recipe.

Camembert questions

What is the best Camembert to buy in the US?

Marin French Cheese Co. Camembert, a California cheese that placed second at the 2024 American Cheese Society awards. Président Camembert is the easiest to find in supermarkets.

Can you buy real French Camembert in the US?

Not the raw-milk Camembert de Normandie. US rules don't allow raw-milk cheese aged less than 60 days, so stores sell pasteurized Camembert, including pasteurized wheels made in Normandy.

Is Camembert stronger than brie?

Yes. Camembert is earthier and slightly tangy, and it gets runnier as it warms. Brie is milder and creamier.

Do you eat the rind on Camembert?

Yes. The white rind is part of the cheese and adds a mushroomy flavor.

What happened to Nancy's Camembert?

Old Chatham Creamery discontinued Nancy's Hudson Valley Camembert, so it's no longer in stores. Marin French Cheese Co. Camembert is a good American replacement.
