Everything Crackers

Everything seasoning is a topping, so the cracker arrives already finished. What that means for pairing, and why it should never sit next to the jam.

The short version

A cracker carrying everything-bagel seasoning — sesame, poppy, dried garlic, dried onion and coarse salt. It arrives already topped, which means it's a finished bite with nothing but cream cheese on it, and a fight with anything sweet.

What it is

Everything seasoning was a bagel topping first, and the crackers are a direct borrowing. The base underneath is usually a plain or lightly seeded cracker; the seasoning is pressed onto the surface before baking so it toasts along with the dough.

Taste
garlicky, oniony, salty, toasted
Texture
crunchy with loose seeds on top
Look
speckled black and white and tan, visibly topped

Two mechanisms, both aggressive. Dried garlic and onion are sulfur compounds — deeply savory and, importantly, lingering. And the salt sits on the surface, so it lands first. Together they mean the cracker isn't a base at all. It's an ingredient with an opinion.

What it pairs with — and why

Pair it withWhy it works
Whipped cream cheeseCool, fatty and blank. It absorbs the garlic instead of arguing with it. The default.
Smoked salmonBagel logic, unchanged. The seasoning was built for this exact combination.
Whipped feta or labnehTangy and thick. Salt on salt works here because the dairy is sour enough to cut it.
Fresh goat cheesePlain tangy cheese is a clean canvas for a loud cracker.
Chive and scallion spreadsAllium meeting allium. Same family, more of it.
Egg salad, avocadoBrunch pairings. Mild and creamy is what this cracker needs.
Sharp cheddarHolds its own, which most cheeses can't here.

Skip it with: fig jam, honey, quince and fruit generally. Garlic and sweet is a genuinely bad bite. Also skip delicate cheeses — burrata and young brie lose completely — and be aware the garlic lingers, so anything eaten after one of these tastes muted for a few minutes.

How to prep it for the board

1. Put them at the opposite end from the jam. Physically separate the savory corner from the sweet one, or guests will make the bad bite for you. 2. Serve 3–4 per person. They're filling and assertive; people eat fewer. 3. Give them a small dish or their own edge. They shed seasoning, and loose garlic flakes in soft cheese look like a mistake. 4. Pair them with something bland on purpose — cream cheese, goat cheese — rather than trying to match their intensity. 5. Always put out a neutral cracker too. This one can't carry a board alone. 6. DIY option: brush plain water crackers or crostini with a little oil and press on everything-bagel seasoning. Cheaper and fresher-tasting than any box.

Quick FAQ

What goes on everything crackers? Cream cheese first, then smoked salmon, whipped feta or plain goat cheese. Anything mild and creamy.

Why do they clash with jam? Dried garlic and sugar is an unpleasant combination, and the garlic lingers long enough to affect the next thing you eat.

Are they gluten-free? Most are not. A few almond-flour versions exist — check the box.

How many per person? 3–4, always alongside a neutral cracker.

Can I make my own? Yes, and it's better. Brush plain crackers with oil, press on everything seasoning, and warm them for 3 minutes at 300°F.
