Is summer sausage gluten-free?

Often, but check

Many summer sausages are gluten-free, but not all. Basic summer sausage is beef or pork, salt, spices, sugar and a curing culture. Some brands add fillers, flavorings or beer, and gift boxes often pack it next to crackers, so check every label.

Summer sausage is a fermented, semi-dry sausage, usually smoked. The basic recipe has no gluten. Watch for added binders and fillers, beer or malt in some flavored versions, and cheese-studded varieties with extra ingredients.

Holiday gift boxes are the biggest risk. The sausage itself may be fine, but it's often packed with crackers or pretzels in the same tray. Read the label on the sausage, not the box, and keep it away from the crackers on the board.

What to check

  • wheat, barley, rye, malt or beer in the ingredient list
  • a "gluten-free" claim on the sausage itself
  • gift boxes: crackers or pretzels packed in the same tray
