Does mortadella have nuts?
Often (pistachios)
Often. Many mortadellas are studded with pistachios, and some are plain. Read the label every time, and for a serious tree nut allergy, use prosciutto cotto or salami instead.
Mortadella is traditionally flavored with peppercorns, and many modern versions add pistachios. They're visible as green dots in the slice, but pre-sliced packs and deli slicers make it easy to miss, and a plain mortadella sliced on a shared machine can pick up traces.
US labels must name the tree nut, so a pistachio mortadella will say pistachios in the ingredients or a "Contains" line.
What to check
- "pistachios" in the ingredient list
- green flecks in the slice
- deli slicers shared with pistachio mortadella
