Why it works

The head is spread like frosting: cream cheese whipped with feta, smoothed into a unicorn's profile on a white board. A twisted string cheese makes the horn.

The mane is where the color comes in: rows of raspberries, orange and yellow cheddar, green grapes, blueberries and pink prosciutto in rainbow order. It's a favorite for kids' birthdays because it's familiar food arranged in a magical way.

Timeline

  1. Day beforeWhip the cheese for the head and cut the cheese cubes. Draw and cut the head template.
  2. 2 hours beforeSpread the head and shape the horn.

Questions

How do you make a unicorn charcuterie board?

Spread a cream cheese and feta mixture into a unicorn head, add a string cheese horn, then build the mane in rainbow rows of fruit, cheese and meat.

Is this good for a kids' party?

Yes. Most of it is mild cheddar, ham, salami, berries and grapes. Halve grapes lengthwise for children under 5.

Can I make it ahead?

Mix the cream cheese and feta and cube the cheese the day before. Keep meat, cheese and cut fruit out no more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. For a long party, build half, keep the refill in the fridge and top it up halfway through.
