Why it works

A French charcuterie plate is simple on purpose: a soft cheese, a firm one, pâté and a dry sausage, with bread and butter. Creamy brie and nutty Comté cover both cheese styles, and country pâté with saucisson sec covers both meat styles.

Cornichons and Dijon are the sharp, sour notes that cut the fat, and radishes with salted butter are a very French snack on their own. Green grapes or a pear and a Beaujolais keep it light.

Timeline

  1. Same dayBuy the baguette fresh.
  2. T–60 minTake out the Comté.

Questions

What's on a French charcuterie board?

Brie or Camembert, Comté, pâté de campagne, saucisson sec or jambon de Paris, baguette, salted butter, cornichons, Dijon mustard, radishes, grapes or a pear and walnuts.

What wine goes with a French board?

Beaujolais (Gamay) or a Côtes du Rhône. Both are fruity and light enough for pâté and soft cheese.

Is pâté safe during pregnancy?

The CDC advises against refrigerated pâté during pregnancy. Shelf-stable canned pâté is the safer choice, or skip it.
