Why it works

The face is the trick, and it's just black food: black olives and blackberries filling two triangle eyes, a nose and a jagged grin. Against the bright orange around them (cheddar, Colby, Muenster and dried apricots), they read instantly as carved holes.

Soppressata lines the pumpkin's ribs and chorizo and pepperoni make a darker outer ring. It's the Halloween board that gets photographed.

Timeline

  1. Day beforeCut all the cheese cubes, slice the soppressata and peel the clementines if you like.
  2. 2 hours beforeLay the pretzel outline, the ribs and the face.
  3. + 2 more stepsThe rest of the timeline and the step-by-step placement are in the full plan.

Questions

How do you make a jack-o'-lantern charcuterie board?

Fill a big circle with orange cheese and apricots, mark the ribs with soppressata, and fill the eyes, nose and grin with black olives and blackberries.

How many people does it feed?

12 to 15 as the main party food.

Can I make it ahead?

Cube the cheese the day before. Keep meat, cheese and cut fruit out no more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. For a long party, build half, keep the refill in the fridge and top it up halfway through.
