Why it works
The planets are cheese balls in different coats, so each one looks different and tastes different. Grated Parmesan makes Saturn's rings, a whole brie is the sun and burrata is the moon.
Black grapes, blackberries and dark plums turn the slate into deep space, and bresaola, soppressata and salami fill the dark areas. It's a favorite for space-themed birthdays and New Year's Eve.
Timeline
- Day beforeMake and roll the cheese-ball planets and bake the Parmesan rings. Store separately (the rings at room temperature, airtight).
- 2 hours beforeMake the nebula swirl and set the sun.
- + 2 more stepsThe rest of the timeline and the step-by-step placement are in the full plan.
Questions
How do you make cheese ball planets?
Mix cream cheese and sharp cheddar, roll it into balls and give each one a different coating so they look like different planets.
What board works best?
A black slate or dark board, about 40 × 24 inches. The dark background is what makes it look like space.
Can I make it ahead?
Make the cheese ball planets the day before and keep them covered in the fridge. Keep meat, cheese and cut fruit out no more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. For a long party, build half, keep the refill in the fridge and top it up halfway through.
